Mazda RX 7: Legendary, Mythical

Article by Kimberly Meyer

A legend of a sports car. The Mazda RX 7 had its humble beginnings going back to the year 1978. This vehicle may be that popular for most people around the world. This is certainly because the Mazda RX 7 has been known for various names around the world. In fact, the very same vehicle is also known as the Mazda Savanna and also as the Efini RX 7. The name Mazda Savanna was actually used in Japan. Certainly, the Mazda RX 7 has become a legend and a myth in itself because of the power, performance, and delivery that it is capable of. Proof of that is its being included in the Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list for a total of five times in its lifetime.

Behind the design, styling, and specified features and details, the Mazda RX 7 actually was first thought and designed as an affordable vehicle that would be able to compete with the biggest names in the affordable sports car segment. It has been destined to compete with the Datsun / Nissan 280Z. Inspiration for styling and design of the Mazda RX 7 came from the Lotus Elan 2 + 2. Upon production, the Mazda RX 7 came featuring and holding a unique twin rotor Wankel rotary engine. It also was a proud owner of a sporty front midship and rear wheel drive layout. This has made this sports car well balanced and very much appropriate for doing great speeds and competing in races.

One could say that the Mazda RX 7 was a direct replacement for the Mazda RX 3. Although this was so, both of these vehicles were known as the Mazda Savanna in Japan. Later on, the Mazda RX 7 then took over and replaced all the other rotary cars from the automobile company with the exception though of the Mazda Cosmo. Many followers of this vehicle point out that this vehicle has certainly been a vehicle that held a true sports coupe design compared to other sports cars like the Triumph TR 6 or other sedans that try to look like sports cars but just fail to do so. This vehicle, the Mazda RX 7, has come a long way since its introduction in the United States and the rest of North America.

For all of your Mazda RX 7 parts and all other Mazda parts needs, you can actually browse through one of the largest Mazda parts suppliers in the United States – Mazda Parts and Mazda Auto Parts. RX7 A Legend of Rotary Motor

How to Take Care of Your Used Mazda RX7|Mazda Sports depends on 16x Renesis Rotary|Something to learn about Dual Rotary Engines

Mazda RX7 has been a proud possession of high speed enthusiasts since the last four decades. Rotary engine was first invented in 1957 by a German Engineer named Felix Wankel. He believed in 4 strokes as to be achieved while rotating. Initially there was no success in the automobiles and it disappeared from the vehicle manufacturers engineering labs until Mr. Masuda Tsuneji identified the potential and worked with NSU in the research and development of rotary engine. In 1967 Mazda succeeded in producing the world’s first dual rotar rotary engine.

The RX-7 is also a powerful car. It uses a naturally aspirated, 1.3L rotary engine which can develop a maximum of 246 hp at 8,500 rpm with the sustained redline pegged at 8,500 rpm and a peak redline at 9,000 rpm. The engine performed well enough to win the International Engine of the Year and Best New Engine awards in 2003.

The RX-7 has gained pop cult status and has even been featured in many movies and videos, most notably in the movie Need for Speed. Many used car auction have RX-8 offerings, especially in online Japanese auction sites for Japanese used cars.

RX8 was introduced by Mazda after RX7 but did not gain popularity, there are assumptions about the bad design and performance Assuming Mazda does move forward with the production of the RX-7, it will be the first production car to house the new Renesis 16x rotary power plant. 300cc increase in displacement and little retuning, the 16x is said to be able to crank out 350hp and 215lb/ft. Assuming Mazda keeps the RX-7′s lightweight roots, this will be more than adequate for the 2-seater sports car.

RX7 has also gained lots of popularity from rallies where the first generation RX7 came on scenes at 1983 Olympus Ralley. In 1988 Mazda made few minor changes in her 2nd. Generation but only in exterior but full design change was not introduced till 1991 late. This model is most popular and is still adored and brings a good price tag for a well kept car. As better known by its 3rd. generation is most sold of all the 3 generations of RX7.

Mazda Rotary has been receiving awards since 1968 for its performance, invention and innovation.

RX7 lovers are always looking for new accessories and performance kits to make something different and have more fun with this car. Still a good number of RX7 are exported from Japan which are considered to be loaded with lots of performance parts mostly made in Japan. The mileage on these cars are lower because Japanese drivers only drive on week-ends and do not put extra miles.

Limit Pushing - 1983 Mazda Rx7 0-60 Test
CHECK OUT THE UPDATE TO THIS VIDEO: www.youtube.com 1983 Mazda Rx7 0-60 acceleration Test The Mazda RX-7: The RX-7 was produced by Mazda from 1978 to 2002. The original RX-7 featured a 1.1 L twin-rotor Wankel engine in a RWD layout. The RX-7′s compact and light-weight Wankel engine or rotary engine is placed right behind the front axle which was therefore marketed by Mazda as a “front mid-engine” car. The RX-7 was made to be a replacement for the RX-3 but it eventually replaced all other Mazda rotary cars with the exception of the Cosmo. The handling and acceleration of the car were excellent for the day. This generation RX-7 had “live axle” 4-link rear suspension, and a 50/50 weight ratio weighing just under 2500 lb making it the lightest generation of RX-7 ever produced. The 12A engine produced 100 hp, taking the car up to 120 mph and accelerating from 0–60 mph in 9.2 seconds. Because of the smoothness from the Wankel engine, little vibration was experienced at high revs, so a buzzer was fitted to the tachometer to warn drivers of the approaching redline. Options as well as models varied from country to country. The gauge layout and interior styling in the third series was only changed for North American versions. North America was also the only market to offer the first generation RX-7 with the fuel injected 13B GSL-SE. A turbocharged 12A engine was available for the top-end model of Series 3 in Japan.

MAZDA RX7 Rotary Engine Basics
The rotary or Wankel engine was developed by Felix Wankel in Germany in the 1920′s and perfected in the 50′s. Later on it was leased to manufacturers around the globe, including MAZDA. This type of engine forms a specialty within the automotive technician community, which makes the RX7 or RX8 technician a rare breed. This video shows the beginnings of this technology and it forms part of our MAZDA rotary engine and RX7 & 8 series of training videos. In this video we cover the basic parts of a rotary, which sort of advantages are extracted from this design, how the engine works in principle, and what are it’s drawbacks. Presented using advanced software CG animation technology to help you understand. Part of our Automotive Technology Rotary Wankel engines and MAZDA RX7-RX8 series shown here on this channel. Enjoy…
